With a DLCD, the downward force exerted by the climber on the camming device is applied directly on the cams and not on the axle (as occurs with a SLCD). When the DLCD is loaded, each cam suffers a rotational force and is forced to “open” until it makes contact with the rock. |

With Totem Cams, each
cam is pulled by a double cable supported on a convex surface so that the last point of contact between the cable and the cam varies with different “openings”. The equivalent loading point on the cam is this last point of contact.
The holding power of a DLCD is determined by the angle (the constant angleof the logarithmic spiral) and the ratio b/c , where b = the distance from the axle to the loading point of the cable and c = the distance from the axle to the point of contact between the cam and the rock.
In Totem Cams, by keeping the b/c ratio of the cams almost invariable for all “openings”, we have designed a reliable loading system which achieves a greater holding power
and more secure camming action.
The rest of the design aims for efficiency and simplicity. An opposite pair of cams is pulled by one main cable extending up to the sling, with each end of this cable connected to a cam.
As Totem Cams have two pairs of cams (four cams in all), there are two main cables on which the downward force is equally applied by the sling. Clipping on the sling, all the cams are loaded but you also have the amazing option of loading a single pair of cams by clipping directly on one of the main cables. |
