We are two engineers who have always put our minds to improving mountaineering material. Early in 2000, we had an idea for a camming device that would work effectively and safely. We built a prototype and, having seen the results, we patented the system (US Pat. 7,014,156). We had created the fundamental system which has remained in place all the way to the current Totem Cams.

The foundation stone was now in place, but there was still a long way to go, so we got fully involved in development work that has lasted for 6 years. During this time we have constantly developed our design, in a persistent effort to optimize every feature of our cams. Being climbers ourselves, we are fully aware of the features a camming device should have, but we have nevertheless taken the opinions of other climbers into account at every stage of development.

We have received inestimable and generous help from many and diverse people. Thank you all so much for your help. In addition to this, in 2005 we received a 30,000€ public grant for technological innovation (SPRI).

Throughout the last 6 years, we have worked through many ideas and, of course, some have gone ahead and many others fell by the wayside. We have researched every aspect of materials and processes. The number of tests, both in the lab or on rock, cannot be recounted.

It has been a long and winding road, but it was all worth it! We believe we have achieved a rounded result, a sophisticated while straightforward device. We are confident that the new Totem Cams will be an important step forward in camming device history.
